I’ve had a number of bags from Sunday Golf in the past, all of them being pretty solid. They have a range of sizes depending on what you’re looking for, whether 6 clubs or 14 clubs.

I’ve just got my hands on their Ranger bag which, at the time of writing this, is their newest (and most expensive) bag. It’s a full-sized stand bag that’ll hold up to 14 clubs.

I will admit, it’s a pretty expensive bag so I don’t know if I’d be willing to pay full price for it. It’ll all depend on how much I like it and how it performs. We’ll cover all of this next.

Note. I’ve only used the Ryder bag for 3 months so I’ll have to spend more time with it to see how it holds up. I’ll continue to do that and will update this post with anything I end up liking or disliking. I’ll change the title whenever I update this article.

The Looks

sunday golf ranger bag

When I first took the Ranger out of the box I could tell right away that it was higher quality and a more premium version of the Ryder.

The material feels more durable, the handles are more heavy-duty, the zippers are more high-end, and there are a few extra features that may come in handy.

The color that I got (and the only one available when writing this) is black. It would be nice to have other options but black is a timeless look.

What I do like about the Ranger is that the branding isn’t as noticeable. There are a couple of logos but they’re grey or black and don’t stand out like other bags.

I want to say that the material is some sort of Ripstop nylon but I’m not exactly sure. With a bag priced this high, it would be nice to have synthetic leather, but that’s going to add weight so I can understand.

The Features

6-Way Dividers: These are full-length and are completely sealed compartments (a lot of bags aren’t sealed around the edges). Each divider is lined with rubber to protect your clubs.

Small Storage Pocket: This is where I’d keep things such as my driver tool, extra gloves, club brush, and whatever else I want to have in my bag.

Bottle Pocket: This is a stretchy pocket that’ll fit a bottle of whatever you drink. It’s a good size and should be able to hold a range of sizes.

2x Carry Handles: There is a plastic handle at the top of the bag and a softer fabric one at the back. Both are sturdy and comfortable to use.

Double Strap: Having a double strap is important on a full-size carry bag. It’s supposed to be self-balancing so you shouldn’t have to mess around with adjustments.

Velcro Glove Holder: I prefer taking my glove off and attaching it to my bag instead of putting it in my pocket. This lets it try out faster.

Pencil/Pen Holder: Whether you draw a line on your ball or manually write your scores, you’ll be able to keep a pen or pencil on you at all times.

Insulated Drink Pocket: You’ll be able to fit 4 regular-size cans in there comfortably. I like that it’s a magnetic pocket for easier access.

Ball Pocket: This pocket can fit 2 boxes of balls (quite a bit more without the box), which should be more than enough, even if you prefer playing from the forest.

Towel Loops: There are 2 heavy-duty loops where you can attach your towel and anything else that can clip onto your bag (speaker, rangefinder, etc).

Umbrella Loop: I don’t carry an umbrella with me so I can’t speak on how well it works, but I’m sure it does the job.

Valuables Pocket: This is where I keep my phone, wallet, and keys. It’s velour-lined so your stuff won’t get scratched and it’s sealed better than the other pockets in case it rains.

Pass-Through Cart Strap: If you’ve ever used a push or power cart I’m sure you’ve had your bag twist. It’s not the end of the world but is a bit annoying. This bag has a hole that you put the strap through which helps the bag stay in place.

Large Storage Pocket: This is the biggest pocket that you can put your extra clothes in. I was able to fit a pair of shoes and my rain jacket in easily.

Tee Holder: This is a feature I really like. Instead of digging through your bag to find a tee, you can attach a bunch of them to the side of your bag for easy access.

2x Quick Access Pockets: These are 2 smaller pockets with no zippers. I don’t love putting anything of value in there in case it falls out, but some people use one for their rangefinder.

The Performance

sunday golf ranger

When it comes to performance, the main things I like to look at are how comfortable the bag is to carry, how well the clubs go in and out of the bag, and how well-thought-out the pockets are.

I’ll start off by saying it’s not the lightest bag on the market and it’s not the most comfortable. I’d say it’s pretty average for a full-sized bag. Some are better, some are worse.

Certain bags are less than 4 lbs which makes them nice to carry. The only issue is that they’re made from lighter and often times cheaper materials.

I prefer higher quality over lightness, so I’m fine with that. The only thing I’d suggest is that the hip pad had a bit more padding.

Other than that, the bag performed well. It has more than enough storage for me, the pockets are all useful, and there is very little club tangle.

The only thing to be aware of is that a full drink pocket will take up a lot of space in the ball pocket. There is still enough room for a box of balls, so this is just a minor thing that I thought I’d share.

The Quality

I’ve had 4 other bags from Sunday Golf and have only had a couple of issues. The material has held up well, the zippers are all still working, and the straps show no sign of wear and tear.

In pretty much all areas, the Ranger is built better than the other bags from SG so I feel pretty confident that it’ll hold up over time.

The one area I’m going to keep an eye on is how a few sections of the bag hold up. The material on the carry strap, the small open pocket, and the underside feel a bit thin, so I’m curious to see how it holds up to everyday wear and tear.

The only issue I’ve had with SG bags was with the stand legs. They either weren’t wide enough (I believe this is fixed) or they weren’t quite as sturdy as I’d like (they’d open and close a bit when walking).

With the Ranger, the legs are wide enough to properly balance the bag and I haven’t experienced the legs opening when I’m carrying it. Overall, it’s a very stable bag.

With the Ryder, the bag would slide back a bit on hard/slippery surfaces (not really an issue, just a bit annoying). The Ranger does this a tiny bit but is definitely better.

I’ll continue to use the bag and will report back if anything happens.

Should You Buy The Ranger?

sunday golf ranger bag 13

After using the Ranger for a number of rounds, I can confidently say it’s a nice bag and I think you’d really enjoy it.

The true full-length dividers are a nice touch, the build quality is high, and there are numerous well-thought-out pockets/features.

I wouldn’t say it’s the most comfortable bag I’ve used because it’s not the lightest (probably average). A lot of the time when you go super light you end up sacrificing on quality, so it’s a bit of a give and take.

The main issue I have with the bag is the price tag. It’s $140 more than the Ryder. Yes, it’s a much better bag, but that’s not a small amount of money.

If I’m going to be spending that kind of money I’d prefer a synthetic leather bag. I think it looks a bit more premium and I don’t mind the extra weight. Some people value weight more, and if that’s the case, the Ranger could be worth considering.

Other Bags To Consider

Even though the Ranger is a very good bag, it’s not going to be perfect for everyone. Some people will prefer a different type of material. Some people will wany something a bit smaller. If you want to see our current favorites, you can learn more HERE.
