Callaway Chev Stand Bag: An HONEST Review

Today, we’re going to be reviewing the Callaway Chev and I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts after testing out this golf bag. In my opinion, if a bag is only going to last a few years there’s really no point picking it up, so that being said, was this a keeper or should you stay away from it?

Long story short, it wasn’t the most well built or comfortable bag on the market, but for the price, the Chev is definitely better than most of its competitors. Most of the lower end bags on the market aren’t worth it in my opinion because they’ll only last a few years. The Chev seemed to be much higher quality and it’s still really light. It had plenty of room for all my gear and what I liked most about it was the 5 full-length club pockets. Sure, you could get a better bag, but you’ll end up spending double the price. That’s why I’m giving the Chev a thumbs up.

The latest version of this bag has a little bit of a higher price tag but I still think it’s well worth the cost. That being said, new bags are always coming out, so if you want to see our up to date list, you can see the best golf bags here.

Callaway Chev First Impressions

When it comes to my golf bag, the biggest thing I look for is something that’s well built and will last for years (if not forever). I’ve had cheap bags in the past and they’ve all fallen apart after a couple of seasons and then you’re right back to square one.

I don’t know if you have piles of money lying around or you enjoy buying new bags all the time, but that’s not me. That’s why I’d way rather pay up, to begin with, and get something that’s super high quality.

The model I tried was the 2018 version (I think) and it was fairly inexpensive (the newer version is a bit higher). I had tried others in the same price range and a lot of them weren’t the best. That’s why I wasn’t expecting a whole lot, but I was actually really surprised when I ended up looking at it.

How Is The Design/Quality

Generally, when you think of cheap and lightweight, the first thing that pops into your head is poorly made and won’t last long. It’s the exact same for golf clubs, shoes, or pretty much whatever else you’re buying.

I was actually really surprised by the bag and it seemed to be better quality than most. It wasn’t the best bag by any means, but for the price tag it had on, it was really solid.

Obviously, I haven’t had it for very long so time will tell, but the legs didn’t feel all flimsy and the zippers didn’t seem like they’d break off after 3 zips. There have been some bags from Callaway that had these issues, so I was glad to see them fixed.

The overall design of the bag was pretty nice as well. It comes in a few different colors but I prefer the black and grey model. I feel like the lighter colors might mark up pretty quickly, but I can say for sure.

The Features

  • It weighs in at about 5 pounds which is super light.
  • It’s has a water-resistant valuables pocket to keep things dry.
  • It has a full-length pocket for your jacket.
  • The handle is sturdy and easy to grab.
  • There are 5 full-length club dividers.
  • The strap is a double so it’s easier to carry around.

How Did The Stand Bag Perform

I don’t normally carry my golf bag (I use a pushcart) but I thought I’d better try it so I can give as much info as I can. I didn’t find it to be the most comfortable carry bag (compared to the $400 models) but it was definitely better than some of the ones I’ve tested.

The shoulder strap was great in my opinion, but there wasn’t as much back padding as the higher-end ones. It wasn’t the biggest deal but it’s something you’ll probably want to know before buying. It should be fine if you’re just an average weekend golfer, but if you’re out multiple times per week, you might want something else.

Other than that, there was plenty of room for all my stuff, and the clubs fit in nicely. I never had any issues with the zippers and my clubs went in and out smoothly. There really isn’t much else you can ask for when it comes to your golf bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Callaway Chev stand bag weight?

A. It weighs in at about 5 pounds.

Q. Does the Callaway Chev bag have a rain cover?

A. Yes, it does.

Q. Will the bag fit in a pushcart?

A. I tied the legs to the bag so it wouldn’t open and it fits on. Otherwise, the legs will open when you set it on the cart.

My Final Thoughts

Overall, if you’re in the market for a new golf bag and don’t want to break the bank, this could be a great option for you. It wasn’t perfect or anything like that, but what you get for the price is definitely worth it in my opinion. You can click here to check the price on Amazon.

The latest edition of the bag is a bit more expensive than the one I tried, but I still think it’s worth the price. If you think the Chev bag is a little too expensive, a great alternative is the Sunday Golf El Camino.

Note. Even though this is a solid bag, there may have been newer models that are even better. I’d recommend checking out our best golf bags article to see our up to date recommendations.
